Jizo statues can be found in temples, cemeteries or standing by the country roadsides all around Japan. These miniatures statues with gentle, smiling face are regarded in Japanese Buddhism as the protectors of travelers, women, and especially the children.
In Japan, pilgrims on their way to a temple, would stop a Jizo statues and say a prayer, often leaving a small offering. Jizo statues (Ojizo-sama) are dressed in red by parents that lost their children, thanking him for protecting their child after life.
